FAN THE FLAME

Let Jesus Renew Your Calling and Revive Your ChurcH

In 1997, a relatively unknown pastor in New York City released a book that spread across the world like wildfire. We all read it. Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire: What Happens When God’s Spirit Invades the Hearts of His People. The pastor: Jim Cymbala. Far from a theory, the book told the story of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, centering around their Tuesday night prayer meeting. Three decades following that first book, the fire still blazes. Jim has entrusted Seedbed and our partner, Zondervan, with a new writing aimed at pastors who aspire to become awakening leaders. It is called Fan the Flame: Let Jesus Renew Your Calling and Revive Your Church. At New Room, Jim will lead a mini-course for pastors around this work. You can watch the videos of other breakouts you don’t want to miss. You will want to be in the room for this one. It will be a turning point for many in this difficult season of church leadership.

WAKING UP TO THE GROUND BENEATH OUR FEET

Environmental stewardship is one of the most misunderstood topics of social justice and holiness in the Christian community. Although it is obviously a relevant and contemporary topic, one our neighbors (both locally and globally) care about deeply, when it comes to environmentalism, the church is largely paralyzed. Our session together will explore why the church, the historic moral compass of our society, has gotten so lost on this issue, and ask the question: Should a Christian be an environmentalist?

How to Hear
the Voice of God

Nothing matters more for us as leaders than learning to discern the authentic voice of God, but few things in life and leadership are more susceptible to delusion, deception, and downright abuse. This session is a big hug, combining the evangelical insights into hearing God’s voice in the Bible, the charismatic emphasis upon hearing God through the prophetic, and the contemplative understanding of God’s still, small voice. It will be practical and inspiring.

Young Adults and the Renewal of the Church

The fires of emerging adulthood (18–30 year olds) can burn up a person’s identity, leaving them isolated from faith and friends. We see the effects of this lifestage in the statistics suggesting that one million Millennials and GenZers are leaving the American church every year. Yet, the fires that have the potential to burn have the same potential to meld—to refine a generation to be uniquely committed to their faith and spiritual families within your church. In this session Austin Wofford, author of Forged: Emerging Adults and the Renewal of the Church, will give insight on young adulthood. Discover the limitations that block young adults from Jesus and community and the areas and methods of opportunity to disciple them well. Join Austin and learn how you can catalyze young adult communities around the person and the practices of Jesus.

HOW TO START A FIRE

Awakening is not something we can manufacture. But neither is it theoretical. It’s on the ground and in real life, and many of us are eager to practice awakening commitments where we live and work. Whether that’s stewarding first signs of personal awakening in a friend, supporting prayer culture in our churches, hosting citywide gatherings, and more, it’s time to take this all home. In this breakout, a team of more than ten awakening leaders from the trenches of New Room will unpack moves they have made in recent years, explaining biblical foundations and breaking down steps for laying fires in our contexts. If you’re looking for possibilities of how to close the gap between what happens at New Room and what you experience where you live, this is the session for you. (This breakout will include a working lunch in-session.)

RADIANT CHURCH

It’s possible to believe in Jesus and be rooted in the wrong storyline. Down throughout history, Christians have rooted themselves in storylines that have distorted the witness of the church. What are they and what’s at stake? Discover why the church must uproot herself from toxic storylines and find her roots deeply embedded in the story God intended for us.

Releasing the Gift of Prophecy in the Church

Jack will explain the gift of prophecy and why it is the most important of all the spiritual gifts. He will demonstrate the gift and show how to train the church in the prophetic gifts and use them in a way that builds the church up rather than divides the church. All believers  have the right and the obligation to hear God speak to them about their lives and ministry. Prophets regularly hear God speak to them about the lives of other people. Prophecy is supernatural revelation about the future, about the present priorities of God for a person or group, or about supernatural encouragement that a person or group needs. This breakout will be both foundational teaching and practical application.

WHEN WOMEN LEAD

Embrace Your Authority, Move beyond Barriers, and Find Joy in Leading OtherS

This workshop will introduce men and women to the unique challenges women face when they step into spiritual leadership. It is for student pastors, church planters, women’s ministry leaders, small group leaders, and nonprofit directors who are up for the challenge of leadership and want to become all God has created them to be. It is also for men who want to be equipped to partner with women who lead. We will talk about the barriers women leaders face, and the strategies that will equip them to lead past those barriers so they can lead effectively.

A Lifestyle oF Prevailing in Prayer

When areas and regions begin putting on the lifestyle of prayer, nations and governments being shifting. The hearts of the harvest are prepared, and spiritual hunger becomes insatiable. As a discipline turns into desperation, war rooms lead to weeping chambers of delivery, and we begin to watch God do daily what man could never do. Prevailing prayer is powerfully productive, and is the calling of the church and the greatest business of heaven. There is no harvest without it.

DISCIPLESHIP BANDS

Simply put, a band is a micro-group of 3 to 5 men or women who meet weekly to engage five transformational questions. Bands are all about creating a safe and honest relational context where we can grow and heal as disciples of Jesus in community. Seedbed has been teaching and encouraging this model for more than six years and now more than ever before it is bearing incredible fruit in the lives of those participating in bands. Join Mark Benjamin in this breakout to learn more about this model and how to begin to implement this in your life personally and your community. Topics will include: why we band, what is a band, how to get started, creating a safe community, and sustaining growth as a band.

Fellowship of Awakening Worship Leaders

You may remember that moment on Friday morning of the last year’s New Room Conference when Mark Swayze invited anyone involved in worship and creative leadership to come to the front for prayer. As hundreds crowded forward, we knew we were suddenly witnessing the kairos formation of a new fellowship. Ever since, there has been growing anticipation of this year’s inaugural gathering of men and women who carry a call to welcome God’s presence and shepherd meetings with him. Hosted by our familiar and well-trusted team at Bristol House and Seedbed, this breakout will be an opportunity for worship leaders across the New Room family to find one another, work out core convictions, and cultivate friendships God could use for helping others encounter Jesus in our communities.
